RYA Practical Courses
RYA Practical Courses
Practical boating courses and examinations are now available in New Zealand through Coastguard Boating Education. An exclusive partnership with the world-renowned Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has enabled CBES to provide internationally recognised practical training courses and certificates specific to Personal Water Craft, Powerboating, Sail Cruising and Motor Cruising.
Introductory through to advanced practical courses range from two to five days on the water. There are no entry level requirements, and internationally recognised course completion certificates are awarded for participation.

Certificates of Competence
Certificates of competence can be achieved through practical CBES/RYA/MCA 'Yachtmaster Coastal', 'Yachtmaster Offshore', and 'Yachtmaster Ocean' examinations. These certificates have worldwide recognition through the UK MCA as proof of a high standard of competence and seamanship. They are ideal for those seeking a position as skipper or crew on commercially operated yachts and private vessels worldwide.Although RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence are required to skipper large Commercial yachts world-wide, they have yet to be formally recognised by Maritime New Zealand. To operate NZ flagged commercially operated yachts, skippers require Maritime New Zealand qualifications (E.g. Inshore Launch Master).
