The RYA Yachtmaster™ qualifications are completed in the following order
RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ Coastal
Aim: The Yachtmaster Coastal has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on coastal cruises.
Duration: (Minimum) 6-10 hours for one candidate. 8 - 14 for two.
Qualification: Certificate of completion.
Prerequisites: Experience equivalent to 30 days sea time (800 miles) including 12 night hours*, a GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC) or higher grade marine radio certificate and current First Aid Certificate.
Notes:
- Candidates need to provide a boat for practical examinations.

- Renewal is Maximum of five years

Coastguard Boating Education administers Certificates of Competence and examines candidates on behalf of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) and Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA). Examiners are independent assessors and cannot be involved in the training of candidates.

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster™ Offshore
Aim: The Yachtmaster Coastal has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht on any passage no further than 150 miles from a safe haven.
Duration: (Minimum) 8 - 10 hours for one candidate. 10 - 18 for two.
Qualification: Certificate of completion. RYA/MCA Certificates of Competence with a commercial endorsement can be used for vessels up to 200GT and as an entry into Megayacht qualifications.
Prerequisites: Experience equivalent to 50 days (2,500 miles) including at least 5 passages over 60 miles, 2 overnight and 2 as skipper, a GMDSS Short Range Certificate (SRC) or higher grade marine radio certificate and current First Aid Certificate.

- Candidates need to provide a boat for practical examinations.

Aim: The Yachtmaster Ocean has the knowledge needed to skipper a yacht or motor vessel on an ocean passage.
Duration: Approximately 1.5 hours
Qualification: RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence
Prerequisites: Experience of an ocean passage (over 600M) as a skipper or mate/watch leader, RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence and RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shore based Certificate of Competence. *Holders or RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shore based are exempt from the written assessment.
Notes:
- Candidates need to provide a boat for practical examinations. Alternatively this can be arranged through an RYA Training Centre. if you have a Coastal Skipper Practical Course Completion Certificate the sea time requirement is reduced to 20 days (400 miles) and 12 night hours.
