Aim: To learn the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and enable one to receive Distress, Urgency, and Safety alerts and routine messages via a VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipped maritime radio transceiver.
Duration: 6 Hours (followed by a 30 minute written and one hour practical examination).
Qualification: Maritime Short Range Operator’s Certificate (MSROC).
A requirement for anyone wishing to operate a VHF radio in Europe, and a prerequisite for the RYA Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence.
The Maritime Short Range Operator Certificate is only available to students in New Zealand because of the practical examination.
