Aim: To learn the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and enable one to receive Distress, Urgency, and Safety alerts and routine messages via a VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipped maritime radio transceiver.
Duration: 6 Hours (followed by a
Qualification: Maritime Short Range Operator’s Certificate (MSROC).
A requirement for anyone wishing to operate a VHF radio in Europe, and a prerequisite for the RYA Yachtmaster Certificates of Competence.
Assessment: The MSROC qualification requires a practical assessment using 'doctored' DSC radios. If you are not living in Auckland, Nelson or Christchurch, please note that you may have to travel to one of these centres for the practical assessment. Course Requirements: We welcome all domestic learners.
A NZ citizen or permanent resident, and an Australian citizen or permanent
We can only accept international learners if:
- you are employed by a company in New Zealand and
- your work requires you to do the course and
- the course is completed within 10 days.
Course Certificates: Learners can expect to receive their certificates up to 4 weeks after they have completed a classroom or home study course with us
The Maritime Short Range Operator Certificate is only available to students in New Zealand because of the practical examination.
Online Self-Directed Study:
The home study course is being replaced by the MSROC Online course early September 2025.
