Aim: To gain detailed knowledge and practical competence in sea survival techniques and equipment.

Duration: 16 Hours.

Qualification: Advanced Sea Survival (Recognised by Yachting NZ & World Sailing).

Course: A comprehensive theoretical and practical course required by crew requiring an offshore, category 1 certificate.  This certificate is valid for five (5) years from the date of issue.

Prerequisites: None. Coastal yachting experience recommended. Water confidence required for wet drill.

Equipment: Students are required to bring along foul-weather gear and an inflatable Personal Floatation Device (PFD). This will be used for the practical session in the pool.

Course Requirements: We welcome all domestic learners.

A NZ citizen or permanent resident, and an Australian citizen or permanent resident are considered domestic learners. 

We can only accept international learners if:

  • You are employed by a company in New Zealand; and
  • Your work requires you to do the course; and
  • The course is completed within 10 days.

Course Certificates: Learners can expect to receive their certificates up to 4 weeks after they have completed a classroom or home study course with us.

This course will run over one weekend from 8:30-5pm on the Saturday, and from 7am-5pm on Sunday. From 7am-9am on Sunday there will be a practical pool session at the Mt Albert Aquatic Centre. You will be required to bring your own inflatable life jacket and wet weather gear, including shoes to this session. After the pool session, you will return to Coastguard Education office for the remainder of the day. Last day for enrolments is Monday 11 August 2025.

Lots of content  - quite intense but hugely informative. The practical component was very valuable and I gained lots of experience for the future. Great to have a course tutor with so much experience and knowledge that kept us all engaged. Excellent.

Which course format is right for you?

Online Study

Online Self-Directed Study: We have 3 online courses; Beginning Boating, Day Skipper and Maritime VHF. These courses are designed to be studied online using your own computer and have great content and illustrations, are interactive and easy to navigate.
Home Study: This is a paper based distance learning option which we mail out to you for you to complete at home. This is currently not online. Both options allow you to study at your own pace giving the flexibility to schedule learning around busy lifestyles and commitments. You can also complete the course in blocks and can come back to it on a weekly basis until it is completed.

Classroom Study

Classroom Courses offer the student the ability to study intensely over a finite period of time (usually a weekend) to complete a boating course. It is a chance to meet up with other like-minded boaties and learn from their experiences. Having an educated teacher with years of boating knowledge enables the student to be taught face-to-face and ask any questions that may come up. 
Virtual Study offers the student the ability to study with a classroom course and tutor but virtually from their own home on their own device. They can interact with the tutor and study at the same pace as the other students in the classroom.
